VOLUNTEER PROFILE
Name: Chuuya Nakahara
Age: 22
Physical Appearance: Here!
Point in Timeline: Post chapter 49, before decay of angels.
World Description: Mostly like earth, except a few people have abilities / superpowers. Also, gods and eldritch beings exist.
History/Background: from the bsd wiki
Noteworthy Positive Characteristics:
Loyal - Chuuya is loyal to the extreme, and the idea of betraying someone is unthinkable to him. Tricking an enemy is one thing, but if you're one of "his" people, he's on your side, forever. He is absolutely hung up on the fact that Dazai left the mafia, and repeatedly calls him a traitor. It doesn't matter that his boss tries to invite Dazai back - Chuuya isn't ready to forgive him, and loudly complains about it when he's drunk. In the novel 'fifteen' we also learn that when he was part of his former gang, the Sheep, he repeatedly said that he had something he called 'the responsibility of power.' He was the strongest, and so it was his job to fight for the others, to protect them. Strength didn't make him a leader, it made him a trump card, and he calls out others who fight only to promote themselves.
Hardworking - Once he decides something needs to be done, he will put his all into it, even if it's not something he enjoys doing. If he decides he needs to learn something, he will study it, even though he's not that good at studying. He doesn't give up, and he doesn't back down. They're not in his vocabulary. When he joins the mafia, he's told that he'll need to work hard to become an executive member - that Dazai will become one before him. He does it in a year, faster than anyone expected. In his words: "Do you know when it's time to chicken out and go home? There's no such time."
Relies on others - While Chuuya may charge ahead recklessly a lot, he is fully capable of recognizing his own weaknesses, and is never above asking for help. In fact, he considers it part of his duty to rely on his subordinates, to show them that he trusts them. This was a hard lesson for him to learn. The Sheep were so dependent on him that they became useless. They become so scared of what would happen if he betrayed them that they betrayed him first. And Chuuya, hater of traitors, understood their fear and blamed himself for it, and continued to protect them. Now, he wants to make sure his comrades don't depend on him to that extent, as it will make him a threat again. He has to rely on their strengths, too.
Mom Friend - Wine Mom, more specifically. But he will slamdunk a warm jacket over your head, and he will listen to your troubles. And then kill the person causing them. Mostly seen in the drama CDs, where he takes his subordinates to a hot spring, makes sure they enjoy themselves, worries about their health, and listens to Akutagawa talk about his former mentor, Dazai.
Extra - This isn't really good or bad, but he's so extra. So fucking extra. He never fails to make a dramatic entrance, ever.
Noteworthy Negative Characteristics:
Emotional - This wouldn't be so bad, except he deals so badly with his emotions, and he has so many of them. He basically expresses them all as anger, because that's the one he's confident in. Sad? Angry. Lonely? Angry. Hurt? Angry. Scared? Angry. He can do happy, though. At one point he loses a fight against a man with zero fighting skills at all. His opponent mentioned how Chuuya has lost to Dazai before, and Chuuya loses his temper, makes the ground around him shake and crack, rushes the man, and completely misses that it was all a trap. Whoops.
Reckless - While he has learned to hold himself back a bit over the years, he'd still like to charge right in to any situation, riding his pink motorcycle, challenging everyone to a fight, before going out to get drunk in celebration. In 'fifteen,' he says that he fights without using his hands because he wants to get to that point where he feels like he'll lose. He doesn't feel much attachment to his own body, knowing he's just a seal holding back a god, and he hopes that the rush of losing will make him feel alive.
Kind of an ass - Or a lot of an ass, depending on who you are. He's generally nice to his subordinates, but random strangers? He doesn't owe them anything, and being a dick can be entertaining. He rarely calls people outside the Mafia by name, instead calling them idiots, people for him to babysit, or just coming up with nicknames. The point is, he's not really addressing them properly. And even when he's up against someone he's not allowed to beat up, boss' orders, he might still pick a fight, toy with them a bit, before getting back to business. One example of this is him delivering a message to the Armed Detective Agency, an opposing group to the mafia. He fights them up until they point out that he's not there to fight, and then he stops.
Arrogant - He believes in his own strength, sure, but his arrogance is also rooted in the Port Mafia. The Port Mafia is right, and he's definitely on a high horse there at times. And also, he doesn't really believe he can lose. Again see him falling for a trap and losing against someone he should be able to defeat in his sleep. That was definitely the fault of his arrogance, because he couldn't fathom the idea of losing. He's never lost a fight. But he does lose battles, because he doesn't stop to think. We also see him insulting people who go against the mafia - specifically, the Armed Detective Agency. When they have to give up a member as part of a deal, he gloats about how his boss made that deal happen. Not nice, Chuu.
Powers/Abilities: Chuuya is an excellent martial artist (the best in the mafia, which is saying something), and he's good with a knife. Additionally, he seems to be serving as the Port Mafia Boss' right-hand man: He's sent out to handle issues arising in areas outside of Yokohama, and trusted to act on the Port Mafia's behalf. When the boss is out of commission, it's Chuuya who takes on the role of leadership. It can be assumed that he's been trained in various forms of strategic thinking, and knows how to properly run an illegal business. He's also the kind of leader who naturally inspires loyalty.
In short: a hothead he might be, but he (usually) knows how to control himself for the greater good.
As for actual powers, he has a god of calamity sealed inside of him. It gives him a power called 'for the tainted sorrow,' which allows him to manipulate gravity. What this means more specifically is:
- He can jump really high, and probably fall from even greater heights without damage
- Or just outright walk on air particles
- And he lands like an explosion
- And causes the ground to crack around him even while staying still
- He can seriously pack a punch
- He can pick up heavy objects like they weigh nothing (because he makes them weigh next to nothing)
- He can make things weigh more than they should, and for example make a person unable to move
- Bullets are 100% ineffective, don't even bother
- He can walk on the ceiling
- He can make his hat and coat stay in place on a windy day
It should be noted that he has to touch an object to affect it, although once he does, the effect can last a while even if he lets go (he states once it will last 'until morning,' although in that case it turned out the person targeted could shake off the effect).
His ability's true form, however, is honestly terrifying. It's called 'corruption,' and is activated by Chuuya dramatically taking off his gloves and reciting:
Do not wake me again
Chuuya only ever activates this in extreme emergencies, and only if someone (Dazai) is around to nullify the power. This is because the longer he is in that state, the less control he has, and after a while he'll just attack everything in sight. And then he'll die.
But what he can do in this state is:
- Hover in the air
- Crush a tank with his bare hands
- Pick up giant apartment buildings like he's superman
- Manipulate the density of himself and objects he's touching to an even larger degree
- And even affect things close around him that he isn't touching
- Throw around black holes that will swallow anything they come into contact with
He's extremely destructive when Corruption is activated, even if I estimate he'd only be able to last about 5-10 minutes before it kills him. I'll consider this part of his abilities nerfed unless the mods want to use it for plot purposes at some point.
Character Fears: Not being real, specifically, that the god inside of him is what's real and he's just a shell. Failure. Abandonment. Not belonging. He'd also be pretty terrified if he was helplessly trapped, since that's not really something that ever happens to him due to his powers. He's used to being able to bust out of anything, anyplace.
And betrayal. That's the worst one.
Personal Item: A bottle of 1965 Romanée-Conti, a ridiculously expensive French wine.
